Around the NYPL: Week Two
First things first, the Jammers rebounded well after losing eight in a row by pulling out a miracle Saturday night and cruising Sunday night. It’s not enough to get them out of the Pinckney basement, but for the way things have gone for Jamestown in the opening two weeks this season, 5-9 isn’t bad at all.
We’re almost one-fourth through the season as Friday night’s game will be Game No. 19. I’ll break down what we’ve seen from the Jammers at some point this week. Likely Thursday.
As for the NYPL, here are my weekly awards.
Hitter of the Week: Andrew Aplin (Tri-City). Unfortunately, I can’t break down league-wide stats with splits, but Aplin had one hell of a week, batting 7-for-13 with four walks in five games. Just two extra-base hits, but he knocked in five, scored eight times and stole seven bases. That’s one pretty great week.
Pitcher of the Week: Luis Mateo (Brooklyn). This was a no-brainer. Mateo started two games this week and threw six shutout innings in each game, grabbing the win in both. He allowed five hits, one walk and struck out 13. He’s now 3-0 with a 0.51 ERA.

NYPL Week 1 Report
I’ll be doing this at the end of each week, we’ll go Monday through Sunday since we started on a Monday.
First things first, how did this Jammers do? A very unfortunate 3-4. Angel Espada certainly might be a little disappointed to be under .500 with the way his club has played, but the little things are hurting Jamestown early. Errors, baserunning mistakes and not hitting in clutch situations is why Jamestown is looking up in the standings despite pretty good team statistical numbers.
My NYPL Player of the Week: David Chester (Lowell) — Could go anywhere here, but from a purely statistical standpoint (since I clearly don’t see all the games), Chester is hit .448 with two homers, four doubles, seven RBI and eight runs scored. He played in all seven games this week as well.
Other notables — Austin Elkins (Tri-City) hit .476 with a homer in six games. Jobduan Morales (Tri-City) hit .450 with a homer. Dreily Guerrero (Lowell) hit a whopping .563 but only in four games. Juan Romero (Mahoning Valley) had three homers this week, two of which I was fortunate enough to see on Opening Day.
NYPL Pitcher of the Week: Gabriel Ynoa (Brooklyn) — This is going to be a tough award each week to hand out (especially without split stats on the league’s website) but Ynoa started two games, went 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings. Struck out eight and only allowed six hits and a walk.
Other notables — Josh Warner (Williamsport) Joan Monter0 (State College) Silvio Medina (Auburn) and Vincent Velasquez (Tri-City).

Around the NYPL: June 20
I’ll try to do this segment at least once a week. In the future, they’ll be a little bigger, but tough to get a real read on players or teams after just two days in the books. Common themes will be Players/Pitchers of the Week along with updated standings.
The long ball is back. Four guys have already hit more than one homerun this year, led by a guy Jamestown fans are happy to see leaving town in Juan Romero, who clubbed three in these first two games. Torsten Boss (Aberdeen) Brandon Miller (Auburn) and Jesus Montero (Batavia) have two.
Not much out of staring pitchers yet (as is to be expected) but Luis Mateo threw a nice game for Brooklyn on Tuesday. He went 5.2 and struck out nine while allowing just two hits and a run. Only four pitchers (out of 28) have finished the sixth inning so far.
It’s brutally early, but Jesus Montero is the MVP of the league, and he’s doing it for a winless team. Montero is 7-for-8 with the aforementioned two homeruns. He has 14 total bases in eight at bats. Yowza.
